Nice to meet you. Thanks for coming over. Our names are Kyle and Audrey. We live in Reno, Nevada with our two cats and three hens.
We are a couple of yuppie-hippie hybrids who try to live a life of principle. We do our best to examine the up- and downstream impacts of everything we do, and that is especially true of the food choices we make. As we'll examine in the days and weeks to come, issues around the food system in the United States are very important to consider and often very possible to address through our choices.
But even for conscientious folks like us, compromise and excuses are like so many items on the shelves of our supermarkets: cheap, inexpensive, and tempting. We'll look at a snapshot of our "baseline" situation and make note of some of these shortcuts and no-nos. Then we'll embark on a one-month journey in which we'll attempt to eat three square meals a day with no excuses, no coulda-woulda-shoulda, no nonsense.
What this means in practical terms is this: we will attempt to create no net kitchen waste for one month. We'll do our best to walk the walk, and we invite you to come along with us.
Here's the general idea:
Part I: Food Issues Writ Large
<> Environmental Harms, Social (In)Justice
Part II: The Klaudrey Baseline
<> These Are a Few of Our Favorite Things (that we won't have for a month)
Part III: An Awesome August
<> How to Make Things You Normally Just Buy
Part IV: Post-Game Wrap-Up
<> Episode VI: Return of the Excuses
We invite you to share your observations, criticisms, encouragement, thoughts, suggestions, and everything else as we take on this project. We hope to learn more about what we can do to minimize our negative impact and hopefully show others how they can do the same.
Looking forward to it,
Kyle & Audrey (a.k.a. Klaudrey)
